This resort was started in 1921 by Neil and Bertha Baumann, who were from Long Island and originally from German ancestry.  Neil was a graduate of Pratt Institute.  Coming to the mountains because of his health with their two sons, Wilber and Connie, they tried farming for a while and then started taking “boarders.”  Moving to the current Brookside , they slowly started to build the current resort on Red Mill Road .  Descendants of the Baumanns are still the owners -- since 1965 Carol and Richard Schreiber.
